Dal Pepper Water

Spicy Hot Dal Rasam made with cooked, mashed dal and flavoured with tomato, tamarind, pepper and few other spices. It has thin consistency compared to the other dal dishes.

  1. First soak the tamarind in the warm water,extract the pulp and keep it aside.
  2. Wash the toor dal under running cold water till water runs clear. Add that to the pressure cooker. Also add turmeric powder, chopped tomato and 1 and 1/2 cup of water.
  3. Cover the cooker and pressure cook it on medium heat for 3-4 whistles. Let the pressure go down by itself then open the lid. Now slightly mash the dal using spatula or back of the spoon. Keep it aside.
  4. Crush pepper corns, cumin seeds , dry red chillies, garlic in a mortar and pestle
  5. Heat the oil in a pan on medium heat. Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds and let it pop now add curry leaves, a pinch of asafotida, finely chopped green coriander and the crushed pepper and cumin mixture. Fry this for few minutes and now add the mashed dal and tamarind extract., Add 1 and 1/2 cups water and salt, mix well and let it simmer on low heat.
  6. Serve hot with rice and poppadoms
